For some of us the festive season means mince pies, Christmas trees and over indulgence, but for others these festive normalities are foreign and will not be shared this December. Unfortunately the reality is a harsh one, with a large portion of children not being visited by Santa this year. These children won’t enjoy the perks of the season or the joy and excitement of overflowing Christmas stockings. For this reason The Royal Hotel attempts to bring some extra joy to Christmas with their "Christmas Present Wish Tree" initiative. Staff and guests have already started to participate in the newly implemented project, which is sure to warm the hearts of those giving and receiving gifts.
The “Christmas Present Wish Tree” is entirely in aid of supporting LETCEE, a Community Outreach Programme, caring for the underprivileged children of Matimatolo, Pietermaritzburg. Each child from the outreach programme has been allowed to select one Christmas present for themselves, the gift that they would want the most , and their wish has been placed in a Christmas card on a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in the foyer of the Royal Hotel. The gifts range from a yellow dress to a small teddy bear, all simple desires which need to be fulfilled.
The temptation of fulfilling a wish has been far too great for the enthusiastic Royal Hotel staff members, who have already selected all of the cards off the tree. The Royal Hotel now waits in anticipation for more wish cards to arrive from the LETCEE Outreach Programme and the chance to fulfil even more wishes this Christmas.
Anyone is welcome to select a tag off the tree at The Royal Hotel and purchase the gift allocated on the card .A Christmas party arranged by The Royal Hotel will be hosted on the close of the project on the 15 December, where each child will receive their Christmas gift.
So if you looking for a way to give back this Christmas, why not stop in at The Royal Hotel and select a wish from the “Christmas Present Wish Tree ”and make someone’s wish come true.

The David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa in Zambia, is proud to announce the launch of a ‘Livingstone Pillow Menu’ and a new ‘Marimba Band’ to the lodge.
To ensure an even better and peaceful night’s rest, the lodge has introduced a ‘pillow menu’ to guests staying longer than one night. The ‘Livingstone Pillow Menu’ offers a choice of 5 pillows including a traditional ‘down pillow’, regarded as being the most comfortable offering the advantage of softness and the ability to conform to a guest’s desired sleeping position. The next popular would be either a hard or flat foam pillow, offering maximum support where it is needed. For something a little more adventurous the ‘green tea and lemon grass’ pillow, sees the stone colour pillowslip soaked in green tea and lemon grass before being ironed, an excellent option for fighting jet lag and revitalizing a tired body. Similarly the ‘lavender pillow’ enjoys the same treatment, however with a few additional drops of lavender oil being placed on the corners, ensuring a truly deep relaxing night’s sleep.
Lodge guests can now also look forward to the sounds of a newly introduced Marimba band as they board and disembark The Lady Livingstone, the lodge’s three-deck, 144-seater Zambezi river cruiser. Comprising of 2-band members childhood friends Kisco and Derek (picture attached), this talented duo started their musical career in a local restaurant ‘Ngoma Zanga’ 5 years ago. Offering a rather unique sound, Kisco and Derek’s repertoire stems from a local Zambian culture called the ‘Lozi, which forms the platform to their rhythmical Marimba beat.

Tinga Private Game Lodge is the newest addition to join the group with two lodges, namely Legends and Narina, each offering nine suites. Tinga is a five star luxury safari lodge situated in an exclusive 5000-hectare concession with prime game-viewing areas and 35km of river frontage along the Sabie and Sand rivers in the Kruger National Park.
“We are delighted that Tinga Private Game Lodge joined our portfolio.” says Shaun Landing, newly appointed Sales Director of Three Cities. Landing harbours a wealth of knowledge and experience within the five star and international markets. “We’re looking forward to offer our five star travellers a true African experience through routes like David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa in Zambia, Tinga Private Game Lodge in Kruger and Le Franschhoek Hotel & Spa in the Winelands.”
Legends Lodge is named in honour of those with vision and foresight, exuding a classic safari lodge atmosphere with a thatched cathedral-like entrance leading to the colonial comfort of the lounge. Built around an enormous Jackalberry tree which is reputed to be over 200 years old, the deck affords magnificent views of the Sabie River, with private plunge pools per suite. Legends also offers 2 executive boardrooms accommodating 8 and 20 guests respectively.
Although similar to Legends, Narina has a distinctly more African feel. Like the bird it was named after (the narina trogon), the lodge is unobtrusive, yet undeniably beautiful, blending perfectly with the riverine forest vegetation. The main deck is on stilts overlooking the Sabie River, connecting all suites with an elevated wooden walkway.
The Sabie River is renowned for having the richest biodiversity of all rivers in South Africa, with surrounding areas recorded to have the highest density of predator and leopards in Africa due to the large number of impala found here. It’s also home to many other endangered and rare mammals, birds, reptiles and plants species.
Guests can view wildlife in open vehicle safari trips or bush walks, also having access to the entire Kruger road network to areas of historical significance and the aesthetic beauty of the southern Kruger. Hippo, elephants and buffalo are frequent with regular sightings of white rhino and the occasional glimpse of black rhino. Over 330 bird species are found here, including African finfoot, narina trogon, wood owl and broadbilled roller.
The Tinga experience offers the ultimate combination of total luxury and first-class service, enhanced by tranquil settings with wide open decks overlooking the gently flowing Sabie River and the soporific call of the emerald-spotted dove that says, “Welcome to my paradise”. |
